Traction Alopecia
Gradual hair loss caused by repeated tension on the hair — from tight hairstyles, extensions or headwear — that is often preventable and, if caught early, reversible.
Common Signs
Thinning along the hairline, temples or parting — wherever tension is repeatedly applied
Small bumps, redness or tenderness on the scalp
Broken hairs or flyaways along the hairline
In later stages, a visibly receded or thinned hairline that mirrors the hairstyle pattern
Possible Causes
Tight ponytails, braids, buns, weaves or extensions worn over long periods
Repeated use of tight headwear or friction from the same styling pattern
Chemical processing combined with tension-based styling
How Hairmantra Can Help
The earlier traction alopecia is caught, the better the outlook — caught early, it is often fully reversible once tension is removed. Dr Padmaja will assess how much of the follicle is still viable, recommend gentler styling and product changes, and support regrowth with scalp treatments and, where there has been longer-term damage, a realistic conversation about what recovery can look like.
